Joan is a successful self-taught filmmaker and entrepreneur based in Nairobi, Kenya, and the Founder of Ecila Films. Her company produces authentic African stories focusing on women, teens, and indigenous communities, and has produced over 200 films, documentaries, corporate videos, and stories for different entrepreneurs. Her films have been featured on leading networks across Africa, including Showmax, NTV, Aljazeera, and Maisha Magic. She was a writer and director for ‘It’s All Game’ which won several awards globally including Oniros Film Awards-New York, Grand Jury Awards, Independent Shorts Awards-Los Angeles and Hollywood Gold Awards. She has won numerous awards, including the Best Director Award from the Women in Film Awards, Kenya- WIFA in 2023. Additionally, she volunteers at Pendo Amani Youth, training young people in photography and videography to create income from the creative economy. She’s reached to over 200 entrepreneurs, created and taught them on how to leverage social media marketing through content creation. In 2021, she launched a new product called Storytelling for Entrepreneurs, winning the Women in Tech Award worth $10,000. Recently, she partnered with Docubox to launch a documentary in 2023, telling the story of deaf dancers at Machakos School, Kenya for the deaf to raise awareness and fundraise for a school bus.
