Daud Warsame

Outstanding Alumni in Civic Leadership

Founder, Refugee Education and Advocacy for Development (READ) Project, Kakuma,

Cohort 46, Somalia
Daud is a Somali refugee and founder of READ project, a non-profit organization that provides adult literacy and computer courses programs to the youth, especially girls. The project aims to address existing gaps between refugee communities and humanitarian organizations, such as education, public awareness of COVID-19, and advocacy for vulnerable members. Through this project, he is co-creating spaces that support community-led advocacy and literacy especially for refugees. READ also produces weekly podcasts, workshops on psychosocial peace building, volunteerism, environment and sustainable communities, and marketable skills. In 2020, during the COVID pandemic they created several messages about COVID-19 prevention and malaria outbreak in various languages such as English, Kiswahili and other local languages spoken by the refugees in Kakuma including French and as a result reached 300-500 individuals through wireless means. In August, 2022, they launched their literacy and numeracy program for absolute beginners giving young mothers and adults a new beginning where they can learn how to read, write, and count. As of December 2022, Kakuma Read served over 100 beneficiaries, and in 2023, they plan to launch income-generating skill-building programs and school-based activities that include Henna beauty sessions, psycho-social peace building, typing classes, community health, mentorship, and networking events on volunteerism.
